Corn Mother Pipe
Item: PIPE-CORN
Price: $225.00

The Corn Mother is described in myths as the mother of all people.  The soil is her flesh, rocks are her bones, the wind is her breath, trees and grass her hair.  The Corn Mother is a great goddess personifying the earth's cycle of fertility.  She is also identified as the provider of plants and horticultural skills.

This Corn Mother Pipe is a platform pipe design.  This figure kneels with open hands from which ripe corn plants and sunflowers grow.  The sunflowers cover her shoulders in the back, while the corn comes up over her head on the sides.

This pipe was inspired by a Mississippian Period Pipe Bowl.  The original artifact was carved in flint clay and was found in Desha County, Arkansas but was likely sculpted at Cahokia.

I modified the original design to make it a complete hand held pipe.  This pipe is hand formed from Native Clay which I dig and process myself.  The details were carved in and it was hand burnished using a polished stone.  It was then fired traditionally in a wood fire which was smothered with manure creating the rich black / brown color.
