Mimbres Rabbit Medallion
Item:
MIM-1
This medallion was hand beaded and is backed with black leather. The red designs on the sides of the medallion are typical choctaw designs and date back to the mound builders. It features a porcelain cab with a hand painted Mimbres Rabbit design. The rabbit design was hand painted with underglazes, glazed and fired to over 2000F for a very durable heirloom finish. It is beaded with size 13 chec charlottes, very small beads. The cord is size 8 glass beads.
From around 200 A.D. to about 1150 A.D. a group of farmers lived along the banks of the Mimbres river in southwestern New Mexico. Near the end of this time around 1000 to 1100 A.D. they began to make the beautiful black and white design pottery which they are known for. This pottery is distinctive in its intricate geometric designs with fine lines and stylized figures of animals, humans and bugs. After about 1150 A.D. their villages were abandoned and no more of their pottery is found.
Size:
Medallion is 3 inches in diameter. It is on a 25 inch beaded cord.
