Swift Creek in copper and stone
This pendant features a hand carved piece of catlinite better known as Minnesota pipestone. It has been carved with a design that was used by the ancient swift creek potters on pottery paddles. They carved these designs into wooden paddles which they then used to paddle the clay into bowls and jars.
The stone carving is then wrapped with copper wire. The hand made copper chain was made to echo the circles and parallel lines in the stamp design. Copper was chosen as the ancient mound builders, which the swift creek potters were part of, often used copper in their jewelry making activities. They did lots of engraving on pieces of copper which they pounded out into thin sheets. Also I think the warm color of the copper complements the color of the stone.
Size:
70mm long by 45mm wide hanging on a 23 inch hand made copper chain.
