Human Effigy Rattle Head Bowl
Item: BOW-HU-2

This bowl is a Mississippian style effigy bowl featuring a Human head.  This bowl is a rattle head bowl, meaning that there are small ceramic balls inside the head which make it rattle.  Many of the original artifacts had rattle heads.  Original artifacts similar to this pot would have been made between about 1000-1400 AD.

Materials and Techniques: This bowl was hand built from hand dug native clay using the coiling method then burnished with a rock.  It was traditionally fired outdoors in a wood fire.  The fire was then smothered resulting in the very interesting black metallic look that this native clay gets in reduction firing.

During the Mississippian period a large number incised pots were made with various effigy designs.  Classic Southeastern Cultural Complex art was believed to relate almost entirely to otherworldly events and supernatural actors, however, the art from the central Mississippi valley also includes a large variety of ‘real world’ beings such as fish, deer. Shells, gourds, other animals and these human effigies.  These were depicted with a varying degree of realism.

Size:  7.25in head to handle 5.25 in diameter for round portion of bowl and 3 1/2 in tall to top of head rim of bowl is 2 inches tall.
