Head Pot This pot is a reproduction of an ancient pot.  The Head pots are some of the most rare of the pots found in the mounds.   They have been found almost exclusively in northeast Arkansas and the adjacent bootheel region of Missouri.  They are different from other effigy pots in that they reproduce an entire human head rather than just a face or part thereof being applied to the surface of a pot.  They vary from very crude to remarkably lifelike.  Most are somewhat smaller than an actual human head.  It is believed that they are meant to represent actual people as there have been many  very different characteristics found.  It is not known if they are meant to represent and honor ancestors or to represent conquered enemies.  They are associated with the Late Mississippian period from around 1400 to 1700 A.D.   The original artifact this pot was fashioned after was found in Poinsett county Arkansas and is dated to around 1350-1550 A.D.

This pot was hand formed using the coiling method and then details added using hand dug clay.  Red clay slip, also had dug was applied to the back of the head and the ears and then it was hand burnished with a rock.  It was then carved and fired in a wood fire.
