Incised Caddo Style Bottle -
Bubbles
.
This bottle is hand built from hand dug native clay using a coiling method. It was hand burnished to a soft sheen and incised with a typical Caddo style design. Then the bubbles were burnished to a high shine. It was traditionally fired in a wood fire which was smothered creating the black color.
This pot is fashioned in the style of the ancient incised pottery of the Caddo Indians of the Mississippian period. The original artifacts were made between about 1000-1700 AD.
During the Mississippian period the Caddo Indians created a large group of interesting shapes and styles of pottery with intricate incised designs. This tradition stretches over roughly a 700 year period. With more intricate designs being seen later in the period.
