Incised Bottle - Snakes & Bubbles
Item:
BUBSNAKE
Incised Bottle - Snakes &
Bubbles
.
This bottle is hand built from hand dug native clay using a coiling method. It was incised with a design inspired by Caddo artifacts. The snakes and bubbles were painted using colored slips and were then burnished to a high shine. It was traditionally fired outdoors in a wood fire.
Choctaw, as traditional corn farmers, revere the snake because he keeps the rodents from our grains. For this reason I have included snakes on this pot. Snakes are often seen on incised pots of the Mississippian period. I have colored the snakes black and white as a nod to the good and evil that balances all of life. There is also a medicine wheel included to acknowledge the power of the four directions and the wisdom of each. This pot inspired by the style of the ancient incised pottery of the Caddo Indians and other mound builders of the Mississippian period. The original artifacts were made between about 1000-1700 AD.
During the Mississippian period the Caddo Indians created a large group of interesting shapes and styles of pottery with intricate incised designs. This tradition stretches over roughly a 700 year period. With more intricate designs being seen later in the period.
