Incised Plate - Serpent Design
Item:
PLATE
Incised Mississippian Style Plate- Serpent Design.
This plate is hand built from hand dug native clay using a slab method. It was hand burnished and incised with a typical Mississippian style stylized double serpent design. It was traditionally fired in a wood fire which was smothered creating the black color.
This plate is a Mississippian style plate. Original artifacts similar to this plate would have been made between about 1000-1400 AD. This plate is not a reproduction of any artifact. This design was used extensively on shell gorgets and stone sun circles.
During the Mississippian period a large number incised pots were made with various stylized designs. Classic Southeastern Cultural Complex art was believed to relate almost entirely to otherworldly events and supernatural actors, however, the art from the central Mississippi valley also includes a large variety of ‘real world’ beings such as fish, deer. Shells, gourds, and other animals. These were depicted with a varying degree of realism.
Size:
10 in diameter
