Shaman Bone
Item: SHABOT

This vase is inspired by an ancient shaman bone artifact, dated to between 300 B.C and 100 A.D., which was found at the Hopewell site in Ohio.  The scalloped silhouette, this engraving style and the symbolic use of bones endured in the southeastern art.  I created this as a tribute to the shamanic traditions and to bring a reminder of the spiritual power of the shaman to our modern life.

To quote Frank Fools Crow -- When we become hollow bones there is no limit to what the higher powers can do in and through us in Spiritual things.

Materials and Techniques: This vase is hand built from hand dug native clay using a coiling method.  It was hand burnished and then the design from an ancient shaman's sacred bone artifact from the Woodland Period was carved into it.  It was traditionally fired outdoors in a wood fire which was smothered with manure creating the black color.

Size: 3.75 in diameter 8.75 in tall
