Avanyu Bowl

This bowl features a hand painted Avanyu design. 
The Avanyu is a water guardian, water spirit, water diety.  The Avanyu symbol is the storm bringer and connected with lightning, thunderstorms and the guardian of water. The Avanyu is also revered as the changer of seasons and the bringer of sudden and sometimes violent change. The zigzag and meandering curves of the serpent or snake are suggestive of flowing water or the zig-zag of lightning. In some tribes Avanyu is believed to be a companion to the Kokopelli.  The Avanyu on this bowl is surrounded with a cloud design to denote the sky where the avanyu dwells and the thunder and lightning.  On the outside of the bowl the clouds are raining.

This bowl is hand formed from Native clay and hand painted with slip of the same clay tinted with a mineral pigment.  It was fired outdoors in a wood fire.

Size:  2.5 inch diameter 7/8 inch deep.
