Small Entwined Snake pot
Item:
SNAKES-SM
This small pot is a fusion of traditional and contemporary designs. It features a traditional entwined snake design around the middle of the pot. This sort of design was used traditional by the mound builders as a banding design that was carved into their pots. In this case it is pierced through making it more contemporary. The snake design is 4 entwined snakes. There is a snake for each of the four directions. The natural color of the clay of the pot is used for the yellow although it is not a really bright yellow. The other snakes were colored with colored slips all natural colors. The black was tinted with a mineral colorant. The top of the pot and the bottom band are incised with traditional banding designs.
It was hand formed from native clay using the coiling method. The snakes were carved and the spaces between them removed. The colors were added with colored slips. The black is a slip that a mineral color was added to the rest are the natural color of the clay. It was then incised with the designs. It was then burnished with a rock. This pot was fired in an electric kiln.
Size:
2 5/8 inch diameter by 2 1/8 inches tall.
