Snake Pipe
Item:
SNAKE3PIPE
This is a semi traditional snake pipe in the style of the Mississippian period (about 1000-1400AD). It was hand built from Native Clay, painted with colored slip and burnished. It is accompanied by a cactus stand. It was traditionally fired in a wood fire. The strange color is a gift of the flame and the result of incomplete reduction or a partial smothering of the fire.
Rattlesnakes tend to be viewed negatively, but this can be ambigious. Both powerful and dangerous they are sometimes associated with witches and witchcraft. In some tribes they enforce taboos and encourage following the rules and customs by threat. They are also associated with the underworld, rebirth, sexual energy, creative force, healing, wisdom, clairvoyance, and charm.
Choctaws revere the rattlesnake for their role in protecting the crops from rodents.
Size:
10.5 inches long.
