Pottery in this category are all hand formed, hand built, one of a kind effigies made by
Marsha Hedrick
in the style of the ancient Woodland and Mississippian period mound builder art. The majority of the ancient pots these were fashioned after were made around 1200-1500 A.D. Mound builder effigies fall into two broad categories, realistic and supernatural or mythical characters.
During the Mississippian period a large number of naturalistic or ‘real world’ effigies were made. Classic Southeastern Cultural Complex art was believed to relate almost entirely to otherworldly events and supernatural actors, however, the art from the central Mississippi valley also includes a large variety of ‘real world’ beings such as fish, deer. Shells, gourds, and other animals. These were depicted with a varying degree of realism. Most of my pots fall into the group of 'real world' beings but some are mythical as well.
Photos are not to scale sizes are listed. Many of these pots are miniatures.
